As others have mentioned it is best to measure then cut the shaft, I go some extra to allow easy coupling and uncoupling an inch or two will help. Don't forget the over running coupler, not as serious as a bush hog but in the best interest of safety. I always use a stabilizer to control side whip when mowing and to keep the drive line from going into a severe angle or bind.

Gunny,
I bought a KING KUTTER last week. Had the same problem. I cut six inches off and everything worked out fine.I put the mower on the tractor and hooked everything up except the shaft. Put the shaft on the mower and make sure it is seated all the way back against the gear box. Put the shaft up beside your ORC and then measure the distance from the front of your shaft back to the center of your ORC. That is how much you will need to cut off both ends of your shaft. Hope this helps.

Mine is a K-K rotary mower rather than the finish variety and I don't know if that will change things a great deal or not. I measured mine at needing right at a four inch reduction and I ended up cutting it six inches to insure I didn't compress it as Dell mentioned below. It seems to work fine.

did you cut 6" off each end of the pto shaft?

how did you cut it squarely?

It's no real big deal, but the King Kutter Finish Mower is a little different....it has that swinging front frame, that makes the mower able to slide back and forth a little. I measured mine carefully, and yet when I raise it all the way, there isn't much of the shaft together. Measure carefully. Even when you get it right, I usually have to hook up the 3-pints, and then roll the tractor forward just a little so I can get the PTO shaft on.

Gunny..... After you install your Over Running Coupler on your PTO Shaft, you'll have to cut off the amount the coupler extends the PTO (about 4") off both telescopeing shafts and the shield too. Don't worry, they really are made to be cut off, but remember, the're really tuff stuff. Plan on wearing out 2 new hacksaw blade in the process. Basically, you can be a little short and it won't matter, but if you're too long you won't beable to raise your Kutter all the way up before the PTO shaft bottoms out..... Dell, the self-appointed ORC safety preacher.
