Howdy!
I just noticed when I was fixing up the gas problem, a lever located on the side of the tractor. Don't know what it's for. There's a smaller lever behind the seat on the same side to (I think) dis-engage the hydralics, but this lever is on the same side (left) in front of the seat. I tried to move it, and at first it ground some gears (ouch). It only moves forward or back. I finally figured out how to move it without any grinding and it sounded like some extra gears were working inside there. Does anyone know what it's for? I probably should have asked what it was for when I bought it, but didn't even see it until I got home. I'm not really that experienced with tractors yet, but will soon be (I hope). Thanks! ...Mike

The smaller lever on the left side, under (kinda) the seat is the pto lever. You're right that it disengages the hydraulics. The hydraulic pump is driven by the pto so the pto must be spinning in order to work the 3 point lift. This is what is known as "non-live" hydraulics. "Live" hydraulics were introduced with the Jubilee in '53 and is accomplished with a hydraulic pump driven by the engine so that you get hydraulics whenever the engine is turning. No clutch work needed, no pto needed. Now, as for the other lever: I take it this lever (also on the left side) comes out of the side of the tractor forward of the transmission? It sounds from your description that you have an auxiliary transmission, probably a Sherman. The Sherman came in an underdrive, an overdrive and a combination over/underdrive version. You'll have to play with it some to figure out which you have. Don't remember which N you have 9,2, or 8. If you have a 9N or 2N with 3 speed trans, the Sherman gives you 6 speeds (forward and 2 reverse) if it's an over or an under drive. If it's a combination you go to 9 forward and 3 reverse. If you have an 8N with a 4 speed then you got to either 8 or 12 speeds depending...
Nseries.com has more on Aux trannies. Click on the link and look for the Aux transmission button.
