I was doing some mowing with my 2N and the arms don't lift up now. the pto is still working, I can pick the arms right up, they are loose. Where should I start, the fluid level is good. Or should I just go right to replacing the hydr. pump.

Thanks

KM

Well, if you feel like blowing $700 on a new pump, without bothering to find out what's wrong, go for it. Otherwise, you might want to do some investigating first. Hydraulic pistons are known to break or otherwise have the "dogbone" punch right through them, rendering the lift dead. Sometimes this same dogbone falls out of the piston as nothing holds it in place. Dirt has been known to block the intake port for the pump, and the control rod has been known to pop out of its socket like Bob suggested checking. Control linkages living in the lift cover have been known to bend, break, or otherwise die.

Don't assume it must be the pump, that's probably the least likely place to start with.

Sounds to me that he is trying to "Bother" finding the problem to his lift so he dos'nt have to "Blow" $700.00 ! (-:

I"ve never heard of the broken piston problem before and I don't think it's possible for the dog bone to slip out of the piston and bore, The cotter key could break in the rocker arm, and then the dog bone could fall out but I'm only going on "Hands on experience"

As far as valve chambers, houseing ect. cracking, I've had 2 valve chambers (Heads) that shelled out due to cracks, picked up something to heavy and "Bang", just like flick'n a switch, blew the side out of the head faster than I can drink a Coors light !

But like everyone said, pop the side covers off first and take a look see and we'll go from there.

later,dave

Nolan, What could be causing the lift on my 8N to be jerky on the way up? Load or no load they are still jerky.Other than that it works fine.Your thoughts or suggestions would be welcome. Thanks,
Dennis

Symptoms like that do describe a pump problem. The pump is a piston unit, so if one or more of the cylinders isn't pumping oil, it would cause a stutter. I wouldn't expect the problem to be the pistons in the pump, but most likely the valves not sealing. I have heard people talk about having cracks in the pump body or head that would only act up under high pressure. The pump is also a barely adeqaute unit, so slow rpms will mamke its action rougher.

And if Zane says I'm all wet on this, go with what he says. He knows them far better then I do.

Open the side inspection plate and check to see if the yoke has popped off the control valve. It happens sometimes without warning. You just slip the yoke back on the tabs. If that's not the problem, then you should investigate further while the inspection plate is open.
