I have an 8n. I think it is a '51. It has an angle drive distributor. It starts fine and runs good for a fixed amount of time, about 20 to 30 mins. It suddenly quits. At first I thought it was fuel related because I had recenly rebuilt the carburetor. Now I suspect it may be related to the electrical system. That perhaps it occurs when the something reaches a certain temperature. I replaced the coil. That did not solve the problem. I was told to replace the resistor assembly but my tractor is after serial no. 263843 and it does not have that assembly. Has anyone encountered this problem?

If you got a condeser, replace with a known good one & if this works look for a bare wire going to dist.

I agree with Mike. It could be the switch...but if it will start again after it cools off, I'd suspect the coil. Even new coils can be bad out of the box. Also make sure the small primary wire from the coil to the distributor base is not grounding out on the terminal. The little insulator where the terminal goes through the distibutor housing can go bad.(Probably not the cause of your problem, but worth investigation)

I agree with Bob. Sounds like a coil. Get a wiring diagram and go through each section checking for problems. It is a pretty simple set up, only a few places things can go wrong. The 20 min time suggests heat and then electrical failure. Classic coil problem!

Good Luck!

Absolutely. Bought a new coil for my 49n. It would hardly run with old one and not at all with the new one. The dealer tried to convince me the coil was good. Finally he exchanged it and the tractor runs so well and sweet I could of cried out of happiness

You will need to do some checking the next time it quits. Check to see if you have spark at the plugs. If you do, check to see if you have gas flow to the carb. That will tell you in which area the problem lies. I had a bad ingition switch at one time that gave me fits until it was replaced. HTH. Mike
