My 2n was running rough, but did not die. The next day it would not start at all. I replaced the plugs, points, condenser, coil, distributor cap. I have 6 volts through the coil, but no fire to the plugs. A mechanic checked my setting of the points and suggested the distributor cap, but that did nothing. Does anyone know what to check or how to find the problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Just went through this with my 44 model. Despite all new stuff, I pulled it down and checked that the copper foil was nowhere near grounding out, and then ran emory cloth through the new points. It fired up right away. Good luck to you!

Could be the rotor button, also. The tip that arcs with the four distributor cap contacts could have burned down to where it's not close enough to spark. You might check it against a new one or replace it. I just bought a rotor button for my 9N at New Holland for about $5. Good Luck.

Don't sell short the possibility of a bad iginition switch. My 9N would cut out and die and restart and really act weird. Bought a new coil and decided to jumper out the iginition switch. Turned out it was bad. Just another possibility.

Could be your points are grounding out. Go to the link below to see how to check.

I hauled the tractor to a mechanic who located the problem fairly quickly. The insulation on the points faceplate had flaked off and wasn't doing the job. He replaced the part ($60) and reset the timing and it's working like a charm. I really appreciate the help from everyone who responded to my questions. We use this tractor to rake hay and were real anxious to get it back to work. I hope I don't need you again soon, but it's good to know where to find you. Many thanks, Cecil

Thanks for the useful information. I checked the points and they are okay. I checked the condenser and it is not grounded out. I put everything back together carefully and still had no spark to the plugs. It did appear that the coil spring contact of the coil was close to case clip, so I put electrial tape on the clip. I then installed a new ignition switch, but there is still no spark to the plugs. It seems that I am losing spark somewhere between the coil and the plugs, but all the parts are new. Any help or ideas of what or how to check for the problem would be appreciated.
