I'm looking at a 1962 Ford F350 dually. It has a V8 (292 cu in) and a 4 speed with a granny 1st. I'm thinking this should be more than enough truck to pull my 8N w/ 5'0 brush hog. Am I correct in thinking this? I also have a trailer I'm looking at, it's 16'0 with 3 axles. Three axles is more than I need, but does 3 axles create any problems?

Thanks

You could haul a house with that truck on that trailer, assuming you can keep it running. I pulled an 8N quite nicely on a Uhaul car carrier with my Chevy 1500 V6. Although my new 1500 Silverado with the 300HP V8 pulls even better!
Good Luck!

I'm going to show my ignorance here. I have a 1983 4X4 Dodge Pickup with a 318 engine and 4 speed with granny gear. (with it in Granny and 4 speed low, you can just about get out and walk beside the truck.) The truck is in great shape. Just the other day, I was pulling my 8N with a 16 foot trailor with dual axles. I remember thinking that it wouldn't do to try pulling in the mountains. Why would a 282 engine with a heavier truck and trailor pull better?

Just curious.

Hey, Bill, give that Dodge a little more credit than that. I recently brought home two 8Ns from Ohio to Az. with my six cylinder Dodge and don't even remember having to drop a gear all the way grossing 14,000 lb. And that hill by White Sands Missle Range in N.M. is a killer. I did pull down to 55 mph though.----- -Michael

That 62 F350 sure brings back alot of memories. Drove one many a mile with and without a trailer. That 292 has solid lifters so adjust the valves on a egular basis. The engine has front and bellhousing mounts so keep a watch on those and also all trans. to bellhousing bolts. Check all springs shackles and bushings good because they can be costly repairs. If you ever have to replace the kingpins remember that you knock the truck out if the kingpin instead if the kingpin out of the truck. Learn to double clutch from granny to 2nd as that trans. is probably expensive to repair. Good luck---you going to have fun.

Bob,

I towed mine with a 84 ford f150, v8 302. The truck was very tired and it showed. Not enough power. The suspension/ handling did fine. I also used a 88 chevy 1/2 ton with a v8 350. This truck was a little old, but not tired. The truck LOVED towing the 8n with filled tires, a loader(heavy full width bucket) and a JD 5 ft bush hog. Note the truck have a beefed up suspension. The trailer was a 2 axle U-haul trailer with brakes.

Trailer brakes are a must have. It may even be the law, I'm not sure. Three axles should help out in towing. It levels out the load, and reduces tongue weight.

Bob, the 350 is plenty of truck to pull your N around. The trailer-I think the tires will wear a lot faster because of side scooting in turns but I don't think that may be a problem because trailer tires usually rot off before they wear out. Especially where I live in the desert sun, rotate them. -----Michael
