Today I was burning a large pile of trees, limbs and other debris after a dozer cleared a fence row for me. The pile had set for about 4 weeks so was fairly dry and ready to burn. After I set the initial fire and watched it roar for about 10 minutes I began to push the debris from the outskirts of the pile towards the center. Some of the trees and roots balls were heavy and I would get a bit of a running start in reverse and push them with my blade. I was wearing overalls and sitting in my 8N metal seat which the combination of the two can sometimes be slick. As I was pushing one load fairly quickly my blade hit a tree stump that was about 18 inches out of the ground. The tractor stopped immediately and I slid straight back out of the seat and found myself almost on the ground and caught up in the frame of the blade. One leg was resting on the pto shaft. After I realized what had happened and got my senses together I thanked God that the tractor had died instantly thus stopping the pto shaft from turning. The shaft would have caught my pants leg and lord only knows what would have happened. It would not have been pretty. I have always considered myself a safe and cautious person but this goes to show that anything can happen at any time. Please think about this the next time any of you are pushing backwards with your tractor. Be safe. As fun as these old tractors are, they can be killers.

The original equipment 8N came with a screw on cover for the pto shaft. It is easy to put on, takes 30 seconds, and anytime the pto is not used it is worth while to cover that short shaft. There are many things that can wrap around that open shaft. Hope this helps. Dan

I might also suggest we all get pto shaft covers and use them when the pto is not in use.

Thanks Keith for the posting , I don't know the indiviual involved but my Uncle and Aunt knew a guy that had that exact thing happen to him, he ended up losing both his testicals, (ouch). His clothing got caught in the PTO shaft and twisted his pants and apparently didn't kill the tractor. I know I've also partially slid of the seat too only to be lucky enough to catch my self before falling off the tractor.

There have been three deaths from tractor accidents here in Nova Scotia in a few months now I heard that I fellow was driving a David Brown tractor when the fuel tank exploded and he is in hospital with 70 percent burns. We just have a roll bar law coming into effect but the old tractors will apparently be exempt. regards
