I went to move my N last night and noticed that my left tire was dragging. The lever for the parking brak somehow got set.

I do not use the left side "parking" brake as there seems to be something missing. It does not set like the right side.

Would somebody post a picture of the left side "parking" brake set up so that i may see what is missing or set wrong.

Thanking you all in advance!!
Mike

Dale M hit it right on the head! This is why I do not use the left side brake. My problem is that I must have used the left brake and the brake prawn engaged by itself. I don't want to take it off but I would like to fix it so it does not lock on by itself.

Mike, my right one on my 8N disengages by gravity when I push down on the peddle. The left one seems to always need disengaged by hand - gravity doesn't seem to do it. Put it on tight enoough when you use it to make sure it apparent when you go to drive away. Don't think there is a spring.

Soundguy, sounds as though you may have been hit with the infamous 8n rear axle leak on that other one, huh ?. Dale-PA

It doesn't leak now, But I believe it did for the previous owner, as he stated he had replaced some seals, and also had the pto changed over earlier in it's life.

The shoe engages ( I can feel that much.. but doesn't bite down good like the other side, and I think, like you point out, that it is due to an old oil saturated shoe. )

I guess if I look on the bright side, that drum ought to be very shiny anf hi-polished!

Mike, Your parking brake is actually a brake "pawl". Has teeth on one side that mesh into teeth on the tractors casting. Is this "engaged" or stuck, or is it internal ? Braking system. If its internal, try rocking the tractor forward/reverse)to free the system internally, sometimes they will bind depending on usage/weather. If persists, get into the braking system and find the problem.

I filpped the lever off and it worked fine. It seems that maybe a spring is missing. It does not like to set, so I do not use it. I would like to make it right though.
