Ok, I'm just about brave enough to attempt the overhaul of the brake systems... I understand that the axel needs to be pulled and really well greased on the way back in. But what other "things" do I need? Are there additional "consumables' that are outside of new shoes? I have heard of Sure Seals, but do not understand what/why they do or where to get them. Does anyone sell a "brake pack" for the 2N?

Any ideas opinions will be appreciate

I pulled off my brake drums on my 9n,because the brakes did not work. Total grease and oil contamination. Question? It already has sure-seals. But they were not seated into the hub. Can I reseat them properly or should they be replaced?

First, if you haven't, get an I&T manual to show you how it is put together. No magic in the brakes. Make sure drums are clean and free of oil. On the 9's and 2's the seals were on the outside and the bearing and retainer had to be removed to get at them. They were lubricated by oil travelling down the axle, and eventually past the seal to the brakes.

The Sure Seal is a gizmo with a metal cone that fits in the hub of the wheel and a conventional neoprene oil seal that rides on the axle. The theory is that it seals the oil away from the bearing and the old seal, and hence the brakes. Only problem is, the wheel bearing has no lubrication, so if you use a Sure Seal, you must pack the bearing in grease. You also must make sure the axle surface is smooooo ooth where the lip of the seal rides. If it is rusted and pitted, dress it and fill it with JB Weld and smooth it out. I have had these in for about 4 years with no problems. They are around $8-10 per pair.

Another thing is the shim packs at the backing plates. I coated mine with silicone to seal them as well.

A final note is that "Dr. Zane" has a cure he claims is sure fire where you wrap the axle in teflon tape and pump in a tube of silicone sealer. You can check archives or contact him for details.

Hope this is helpful.

Kevin..... I&T FO-4 repair manual, about $20 most tractor supply parts houses. I & T (Implement & Tractor) was a trade school (simular to Jr. colleges) and they published what was essentually their text books (on a lot of tractors). Since Ford had their own private dealer mechanics schools and books that they didn't want anyone else to know how to repair because it took money out of the Ford Dealers pocket....ya' gotta understand business, licensees, franchises...etc. Since Ford is no longer in the tractor business, it is somewhat moot. You can now buy reprints of Ford tractor repair manuals, parts books, assemby books. Try "www.n-news.com", check their archives for all sorts of manuals. The N-Newsletter is a good read too. Good people to do business with..... Dell
