I've been reading every posting I can find about 9n-2n's not starting! I last used the tractor to scrape the parking lot gravel at our church about 2 weeks ago. That day I had to keep choking it to keep it running, especially under load. Brought it back to the house and it died in the yard and wouldn't re-start and didn't have time to mess with it so I let it sit. Two days ago we had an unexpected early snow, and now I need to scrape the driveway! I cleaned the plugs, which were carbon fouled.
I'm getting plenty of gas from the fuel line.
I took out the little screen where the fuel line attaches and it's not blocked.
When you take the plug out the bottom of the carburetor, lots of gas flows out.
I detached the tube from the air cleaner at the carburetor and tried spraying starter fluid in there, The engine sparks, almost grabs, even sputters for a few times [sometimes] and then dies. BTW, gas flows out the carburetor at the air inlet after attempting to start it. From everything I've read, it sounds like I've got a clogged jet. ANY HELP GREATLY APPRECIATED! The 8" of snow in the driveway [north facing] is partially melting and then refreezing to a solid sheet of ice as I type! Steve Shelton

Well, I got out of the snow covered driveway and found my way to the local TSC about 15 miles away, and yes, right there on the hanging display was the correct ingition system kit [plugs, points, condenser, dist. cap, etc]. Haven't had time to do the work yet, but will post later if I have success.

Process of elimination right?

Keep those suggestions coming!

With gas coming out of the air inlet, I surely suspect that your float if sticking and its causing your engine to flood out. It should run 'momentarily' with the starting fluid as long as the plugs aren't wet with gas. I also suspect that you have an air leak at the carborator gasket which caused you to have to constantly choke the engine earlier. Ron

Somebody--could have been llamas--once said 70% of n series carb troubles turn out to be electrical. If it only sputters on starting fluid it sounds like you are part of the seventy percent. With the junk in modern gas I have never had any luck cleaning plugs. If'n it were mine I would change them. Then the distributor is a piece of pie to work on if you pull it--won't go back wrong unless you force it--and points and condensor are cheap too. I would do all of that before I took even a screw driver to the carb.

Your mileage may vary

For what it is worth, I would look at two things.

Number 1...the main screw on the carb:
When I got my 2N, the main screw kept backing out and leaning up the mixture. Pulling out the choke a little helped, but eventually did no good. Make sure that whatever keeps the screw in place is working. Mine had a metal tang that was supposed to push up against the screw that had loosened up. Try adjusting the screw (larger and easier to get to) by tightening in and backing out two turns.

Number 2...the coil/points/condensor/ignition switch: It seems the achiles heel of the 9/2N is the ignition system. Front mount coils short out when you least expect it, and if the condensor is bad, then the points foul up quickly. And of course, if the ignition swith is bad, the coil never gets enough juice to start with. I recomend starting with a tune up kit. TSC has a master kit for about 30 dollars, including new dist. cap, plugs, points, rotor and condensor. Start there and see how it goes.

Ed, I think that when you back off the screw, It makes the mixture richer, not leaner. You lean the mixture by screwing it in. Several things come to mind regarding the plugs
How old is this engine and is the fouling due to oil comsumption or a rich mixture/flooding? Idon't know why. But I suspect you may be flooding. Is the carb wet? Does a lot of gas drip out? You may have a bad float or an improper adjustment. One diagnostic "Tool" would be to shut down the fuel completely and try starting it on ether. If it fires ok ,then your ignition is good and it's a fuel problem. If not, then you've got an ignition problem. Good Luck, Rich

You might be right about the screw. Sufice it to say that a loose screw is not a good thing.

A tune up might be in order but I would go with a bad carb. gasket sucking air .

You may want to check for a vacuum leak around the intake manifold. This would cause a lean mixture, and might even be intermittant because of expansion when it warms up.
THe other suggestions are excellent--especially points
