On the advice of some postings on thsi board I recently purchesed some brake cleaner to help get the old girl cleaned up for a new paint job. The brand I bought contained an assortment of chlorinated solvents, acetone toluene etc. Just a word of warning ; these solvents can have serious side effects. Care must be taken when using them; long sleeves, gloves, organic vapor or better yet fresh air respirator would be in order. Keep the amount used at any given time to a minimum and make sure the work space is well vented. Hope this word of warning comes in handy.

I think I made one post in favor of the stuff. I have used brake cleaner many times to clean grease off individual parts and it worked great, however I have never used it for any big jobs. I checked the can and it did contain some nasty stuff however it also had no petrolium distalates no cfcs, and no chlorinated solvents. It also says to be careful around rubber and plastics which would be an issue on certain engine applications.

Sounds like the stuff could have some value but be careful.

Good luck!

Red devil lye and corn starch mixed in water is a lot cheaper than all those chemicals and does a good job too. For about 5.00 you can do a whole greasy tractor all the way down to the metal and it won't pollute anything and you won't have to wear anything protective except safety glasses and rubber gloves.
If you or anybody else wants the formula just Email me.

Hi Zane: A little insight? I used Red Devil Lye this weekend but did not use the corn starch with it. Is the starch used to help adhere it to the metal, or does it help strip paint? Just curious. Also, how long do you let it sit on the paint, and what tools have you found that work best to get in tight places and between parts? I used a scraper for the larger areas, and the end of a flexible hacksaw blade to get in hard to reach spots (to remove paint). But I am curious about how much elbow grease is required? and time? It took a lot of work to get down to the old grey paint and I have only completed about 10% or less in about 5 hours! 9N'er (what is the recipe by the way?)
