thanks for any help

You can jumper the field and the ground terminals together on your generator while the tractor running. If you do not see 20amps on your ammeter there is something wrong with your charging system.

TAKE THE COVER OFF OF YOUR REGULATOR. THE VOLTAGE CONTROL RELAY IS ON THE RIGHT FACING YOUR REGULATOR WITH THE TERMINALS DOWN. SINCE YOU ARE CHARGING TOO MUCH, YOU NEED TO INCREASE THE TENSION ON THE SPRING AT THE BACK OF THE RELAY. A LONG NOSE PLIERS OR A BLADE OF A SCREWDRIVER CAN BE USED TO BEND THE TAB AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SPRING DOWNWARD. I WOULD DO ALL OF THIS WITH EVERYTHING OFF. MAKE AN ADJUSTMENT AND THEN FIRE IT UP AND MEASURE THE VOLTAGE AT THE BAT. REPEAT TILL YOU ARE CLOSE TO 7.35V.

THE WORST YOU CAN DO IS WRECK THE REGULATOR AND BUY A NEW ONE. THIS IS A RUGGED DEVICE. DONT WORK ON WATCHES. GOOD LUCK.

Sorry, Old chap.... The contacts on the voltage control relay are normally closed. When the potential is reached to overcome the spring tension the contacts open and place a resistance in the field path... Increasing the spring tension will require a higher voltage to open the contacts . Which is the reverse of what he is looking for. I really did not want to get into this.. I guess I got sucked in anyway..

An old man once told me that the only persons qualified to work on a watch was a watch maker and a fool.
Same goes for the voltage regulator.
You can give it a try if you want too by removing the top of the regulator and locating the part that is actually the voltage regulator. It will not be the one that the battery wire is connected to. If it is only a two section regulator it will be the other one. Sometimes there is a screw to adjust the voltage output with and sometimes you have to bend a tab to adjust the regulator.
If you have a volt meter hooked up to the battery while the engine is running you can tell which was is up and which is down.

So, who should he employ? The watch maker or the fool? I am not getting sucked into this one..
Zane, I think that the old man that told you that story was very wise....

OK Claus and Zane, I think I get the point. One more quick one; it seems when the idle speed goes up I can get up to +10 amps but when I let idle down as far as I can I get either 0 or -1 or -2
Help! Does this sound like a short or a bad Voltage regulator? I did just replace the terminal block; is there a specific wiring for it or can any wire go on any post? Might this be the problem if I crossed them. Just tell which way to go and I'll go. The wiring and voltage reg are the only two things I have yet to replace on this thing. Just having fits figuring this out (but I still love it). Any advice would be welcome. Thanks,
tom

With a generator, especially one of the old Ford generators like the Ns have you will normally not show any charge at idle. Especially if it will really idle which most N don't do too good.
I was just going to say the same thing that STUMP PULLER said. If it isn't evaporating the water out of the battery too quickly and it is keeping the battery charged I would say, " Don't worry, be happy" If it ain't broke don't fix it!

SOUNDS NORMAL EXCEPT IT IS CHARGING TOO MUCH.

he said UP TO 10 ,but my question is does it stay there? or just recharge the bat after starting. i'm trying to learn this electric stuff myself. i wondered about the points on the reg,and should we mess with them and when. glad there is this forum!!=) much rather do it myself than pay someone. no fun when someone else gets to fix it !! =) thanks guys

THIS IS AN ON GOING POST AND IT APPEARS HIS SYSTEM IS OVERCHARGING. 10 AMPS AFTER RUNNING A LONG TIME. AFTER RUNNING THE CHARGING SHOULD DROP DOWN TO A COUPLE AMPS OR LESS. YOUR REGULATOR WILL RUN A LONG TIME WITHOUT TOUCHING IT. TO CHECK YOUR CHARGING YOU SHOULD MEASURE THE BAT VOLTAGE AT FAST IDLE, IT SHOULD BE 7.35V FOR A SIX VOLT SYSTEM, AND 14.7V FOR A 12 VOLT SYSTEM.
