OK , I think I have my electical system in order now but one last thing bothers me; the ammeter still shows +10 when I run. Is this correct? As llama suggested I checked the output on the battery with a voltmeter. 6 volts when engine is off and 8 when at idle. Should I be reading 10 amps on the gauge (its new)?

I think I figured out why farming is so labor intensive; 1 week planting, 1 week harvesting, and 50 weeks working on the tractor:)

thanks for any help
tom

YOUR 10 AMPS WILL GO AWAY IF YOU ADJUST YOUR REGULATOR TO PRODUCE 7.35 VOLTS AT FAST IDLE.GOOD LUCK.

Stumpuller, how do I adjust it? Claus; re looked at it and found the amps at idle about 1. At higher RPM it goes to 10. What do you think, replace the voltage regulator still? I may try both if I hear from you guys.
thanks tom

Several posts back, I wrote about adjusting the voltage regulator. I would just replace it.. This is not a job for the average person with limited electrical knowledge...

If you have a 6 volt battery and it is reading 8 volts and the ammeter is reading 10 amperes, something is wrong. Most likely the voltage regulator is not functioning properly. If it is actually charging at this rate, you will overcharge the battery and boil the electrolyte off. Make sure that the regulator is grounded properly. If it is, try a new voltage regulator.

OK Claus, what numbers should I be looking for? Is it the 10 amps thats abnormally high or the 8 volts? Thanks for all the help; you seems to know a great deal regarding electrial work. I hope your not getting tired of me asking simple questions.

10 amps would be ok, if the battery was low on charge, say around 6.0 volts. The relay should cut the charging to a trickle at 7.5 volts or lower. 10 amps at 8 volts, both numbers are too high.

Probably the only thing that is keeping the generator from destroying itself is that the regulator is limiting the current output. This is needed on shunt type of generators (Remember that the output voltage is also applied to the field coil. The higher voltage output is also applied to the field winding producing a stronger magnetic field producing more output current, ad infinitum) My generator when bench tested put out 90 amperes. (You only want to do this for a short time) The figure one reads in manuals i.e. 20 amps for a (8N) is due to the regulator current and voltage regulation.
