I have had the 1948 8N for about 8 months. When I bought it was told about a "Knock" in 2nd gear. Only when moveing and only in that gear. I have avoided this gear since my land is eather up hill or down. Noise is worse when compresion brakeing. Any idea's ? Searched the archives and could not find the answer. Maybe a broken tooth ? Should I tear into the N now or will it be all right till winter ? THANKS!!!

So this knocking sound does only come from second gear, it's not just the previous owner telling you this? If so, then yes, the problem is second gear. You can visually inspect it easily enough by just removing the transmission cover and using the ole eyeballs. Second gear is a weak gear in that it is thinner then the others. It's also the most favored gear. This is a design flaw imo. Regardless of my opinion on the matter, we're stuck with it. If you can avoid second gear, do so and you will avoid the problem. Then you can wait until a convenient time to repair it.

Nolan, Thanks for the advise. It still has the "Knock" in 2nd gear and I do not use that gear. Thanks again.

Mark.
