Is this stupid or what?

I've had my 8n tractor for about six years now. Rebuilt the engine the first winter after I got it (new bearings, ground crank, sleeves, rings etc.)

Well, I have always heard a slight rattle coming from the front of the engine. My first thought was that the water pump was going bad, but since I had replaced it during the rebuild I doubted it. After listening to it some more over the next few months (and the pump not failing), I decided it must be a bearing in the generator. Once again, I decided to wait until it got so bad I couldn't stand it. Never got any worse, so I just lived with it. Five years later I've finally found the source...

It was a screw bouncing around inside the left headlight.

(Apparantly, some previous owner broke off the screw on the headlight, so he just wrapped the wire around the stub...and left the spare part inside.)

Argh.

We took the keys off a computer and re-arranged them so when old sarge typed in his name it spelled an obscenity. We ran out of the office before he heard us laughing. He is still mad about that.

No need to open a headlight unless its burned out or you're rewiring (which I was doing).

I started laughing when I figured it out... and I felt stupid (hence the title of this thread).

2N was running rough last year - sounded like one piston was hitting every third or fourth time. Took a cople of minutes messing with the carb before I saw waht looked like someone welding on the other side of the tractor (bright blue flashes).

One plug wire came off distributor and every third or fourth try, a spark would arc from the cap to the wire and the piston would fire.

For a while it sounded like a hit-n-miss Ford.

Ed, these Ford N's want to run. Our club works the pit area for the Monroe Co. Fair (Mi) during the tractor pulls. We tow those big monsters around with our antiquers. One year my 2N fouled a plug the first night so I bought 4 new ones to put in the next night. In my haste, I didn't put the wires back on the plugs until 2 hours into the night my son on my 8N said he could see sparks. It was running fine.

Not that I am proud of this...but it is funny.

When I was younger I got a little upset at a neighbor. I took out my anger by removing his hubcap, rmember the nice tight fiting ones on the Ford Truck steel wheels, I put a little bit a few stones in the metal hub cap and put it back on the truck.

The noise drove him nuts for a few days.

I don't think he ever knew it was me. I thought I was pretty sharp back then for thinking that one up on my own.

A slow day at work a number of years ago. We unscrewed the mouthpiece of one of those old analog phones. Removing the mouthpiece would have given it away, since it would have been much lighter. Instead, we put tape across the contacts and replaced all the pieces. It is absolutely hilarious to watch one side of a phone conversation when that person can only hear, but cannot be heard. The loudness of his voice increases until everyone in the office can hear him. Unfortunately, the guilty parties are the ones who can't keep a straight face.

I was working on a dairy on the coast & the boss brought his wifes car to me & asked me to figure out what was rattling in the drivers door. Was a bit leary about tearing into a fairly new car, Warrantys & all but he said to go for it & we found a can attatched to a string run across there with a note that asked how long it took us to find this rattle. Car was less than a year old. Must have been a slow day at the factory. Play safe.
