Well I've been working on getting the 2N to idle. It runs well a 1/2 throttle and more. Dell suggested it may be running lean.

Went out to start tractor..... ....wouldn't start. Just day before I had taken it out on a 2mi. cruise. I had to, it was over 20 degrees out. (This is MN - 20+ is warm for JAN.) Anyway, the motor turns, and turns, and turns, gas pours from carb. Ok, draft through carb pulling in gas presumeably. Go spark? Yep. Damn near knocked me over by the way. No, that is not how I usually check;-). Starts on starting fluid no problem. Runs until the fluid is all used up. Then..... ...

I notice a funny smell....smoke coming up from behind dash. Tractor still turns over, starts and then dies with starting fluid as before.

Monday, she's dead. Hook up battery charger....charger won't start. Seems a plate has broken loose???---battery is a month old. Nearby battery charges fine...charger is ok. And that new manifold and gasket??? Leaking by #4..... .. again.

Lord, shoot me now..... ..... .....

you have 6v or 12v. smell indicates a short. check all connections for loose wires and clean contct.

battery is shorting out. look for condensation or ice on part.

fuel line freeze? condensation in carburetor? hows the tank? water in it? condensation?

manifold leak?

Bill..... ..if'n it starts on ether quickstart, then you know your problem is NOT ELECTRICAL, but you probably figgered that out after ya picked yerself up offen th'ground (grin).

Its a fuel problem. Find your carb/manifold leak. Afterall, you did replace your manifold. Perservere..... ..Dell

I'm sitting down here in Owatonna, betting you wished you saved your 2 mile cruise for today. If your manifold is leaking, that would be the first place to start. The leak could be severe enough to eliminate the updraft necessary to move the gas through the carb and into the cylinders. The smell concerns me as well and dead battery leads to me to believe that something shorted out in the electrical system and is causing the system to be grounded and drain your battery.
