Loader Hydraulics Work Unevenly

I have an 8N with a Wagner WM4 loader and a front mounted pump. While using it yesterday to move snow (we finally got some in eastern PA) I notice that the lift cylinders don't lift evenly. The left one starts to lift first and then the second one kicks in causing the loader frame to twist slightly. Mind you, the difference is only about an inch, but it makes me wonder. I wouldn't think this is normal? Any ideas what might be wrong?

TIA!
Dave C.

Remember to check the hydralic fluid with all the the pistons collapsed.

The Wagner loader is an open system with the frame acting as the oil resevoir. Up near the top of the frame should be two holes on the inside of the tube frame, one on each member, right above the battery/gas door. My first thought would be to check fluid level. Are you using the correct oil? If that is ok, make sure there are no pinched or kinked hoses or that a hard line has been pinched. You might need to look at the filter by the pump. Lastly, I would look for a leaking cylinder. It might be an internal leak.
I've had mine (my dad's) for 40 plus years. It blew the bucket cylinder once and plugged the filter real tight. It also does not like to be low on fluid. That causes pump cavitation which can destroy a pump. I've had the pump rebuilt once.
Hope that helps.

Thanks guys! But now I have more questions. I'm assuming the holes should be open? I'll check them. Since it's an open system, does that mean I don't need to check for air in the system? Should the fluid be filled up to the fill opening? I've never checked the level nor do I know what type fluid is in it. I will check all the hoses and pipes for restrictions. The system does not have a filter - should it?

Thanks for any and all advice.

"Should the fluid be filled up to the fill opening?"....thats what I do for mine.

"I've never checked the level nor do I know what type fluid is in it."....The fill opening is the level check for mine. If I can't feel it w/my pinkie finger, its to low (in my opinion). I use plain old hydralic fluid.

"The system does not have a filter - should it?".....I've never seen a filter on mine. If I have, I've never noticed it. Im gonna look when I get home tonight.

My Wagner has a "Y" pipe feeding to the pump. The straight side is fluid supply and the other side has a pipe plug. Behind the pipe plug is a cone shaped filter. Mine got plugged up when I blew the piston in the bucket cylinder. That is when I found out it had a filter (after 20 years).

that was just to drain the system. I suppose if I pull the filter, I also drain the fluid.

You will unless you are quick. Might not be a bad idea anyway if you have the time. Or, get the filter out and quickly put the cap back on.

Now I have some place to start and I learned about the filter in the process.

Any chance there might be air in the system?
Just a thought.
