Is there anything special about removing the starter--the bendix seems to jam between the flywheel and the casting.

Bob..... ..would you believe that this is a common problem and has been discussed many times, you might want to check in the "archives" at the top of this great N-Board.

But basically, most removers put some 5/16-NC nuts on the end of the very long starter bolts so the starter doesn't fall apart with all the attendent problems of putting it back together.

Then some find they have to remove the oilfilter canister, I didn't. Some find they have to remove the block water drain, I didn't. Some find that they "haffta holle thar tungue jusss sew" and wiggle and jiggle and it will eventually clear.

Most endup grinding a notch at about 1-2 o'clock when they are ready to re-install to clear the starter drive. It doesn't hurt the mechanical strength of the case and no one can see it with the starter inplace.

I know you didn't ask, but I strongly recommend the improved "clutch" type starter drive over the slightly cheeper bendix screw drive..... ...Dell

I just had mine in and out twice. It takes alittle menuvering but will come without cutting. My oil filter is in place and I did not have to remove the water valve. The end of the bendex goes around the flywheel, so you have to point that end toward the outer casing wall with the motor near the block. With alittle movement up down and side to side, you can slip it past the gears. It is hard to remember the exact angle that is needed. I did not put the nut on the long bolt but it is a good idea. I had to hold mine together as I worked with it.
