Intermittant knocking.. loose sleeve ???

Had the engine completely rebuilt on my 48 N late last winter and now have about 60 hrs. on it. A couple of weeks ago heard a light knocking shortly after starting. Shut it down and called the guy who did the overhaul. He came over to listen to it, started it up, sure enough, no knocking. Purred like a kitten. Since then the sound has come and gone a few times. Loose sleeve is the only thing I can think of. The mechanic did say he ground a little off the top of one of the pistons that was tapping the head during the rebuild. Any other ideas ????

Jim, When you had it rebuilt, did he just do the top end; sleeves, rings and pistons? Or was the bottom end done to? If it was, were the proper sized bearings used? When we got our 2N 4 yrs ago, it had just had a typical N engine rebuild (top end). It ran great and never faltered, but we had an intermitent knock right along. Finally, the rear main was leaking about a month ago, so I tore apart the bottom end, and how sloppy those bearings were. Crank got turned, and proper sized bearings were installed. Now it just purrs! Pete

This was a complete rebuild, ground crank, new rods, bearings, pistons, sleeves and even a new cam. Two lobes were were way out of spec. Really hard to find a camshaft for an N. The knock started well after 50 + hrs.
