If anyone else converts their tractor from 6 to 12 volts instead of fixing the real problem and seeing all the headaches it causes on this forum, They should see a doctor first thing in the morning.

One of the best things I did to my 8N was to convert it to 12 volts. No problems, ever!
If it is done right, there should be no problems.
I converted after a full engine rebuild, so it wasn't realy needed. But the overall convenience has been more than worth that little extra effort. I also have been able to retain the original ignition system, and can jump her with any 12 volt battery or vehicle, but never have had too. I can charge her with a 12 volt charger, and I can use all 12 volt bulbs. I have more light now and can run more of them than with my new 6 volt battery. I also added a meyers snow plow on the front with a 12 volt hydraulic pump that runs the plow and adding it and running it is no problem. I have never had a problem starting her in cold winter weather since I have converted to 12 volt. I bought a 12 volt internally regulated GM alternator for under $50.00, and have never had a problem with it. I still have the 6 volt charger on a shelf. Any takers?

Very well put. I did the 12Volt conversion per instructions from this website, and it certainly has helped in the areas you mentioned.

Before I knew better (before finding this site) I just stuck a 12 volt battery into my '46 2N. I know better now, but still keep it in, without changing any ballast resistors or coils. Been running it that way for around 9 years now. The old generator bracket cracked, and I used an 12v alternator as an idler pulley. After about 7 years that way,,,charging the battery externally once a month, I finally hooked up the alternator to actually charge the battery. She cranks over within two R-R's every time, summer or winter. Like you implied, don't mess with a good thing,,,it works for me! Bob

Scott..... ..You've made an interesting observation, but the problem with most 12 volt conversions, is ya only hear about the mucked up'uns done by the electrically challenged.

I'm a 12 volt advocate for the right reasons, that said, I haven't found the reason to convert my eazy starting 6 volt '52 8N and I know how to do it right and why..... ...Dell

I agree Scott! I have a frame off restored 1949 B1B Dodge pickup. I use it all year around and it is 6V and works great! I also have use of my uncle's 52 cub cadet. Also 6V and works great. I have a '44 2n also 6V and works great all year. Sometimes in the winter it doesn't get started for 2 months at a time. It never lets me down!

I'm not into blanket statements for causes or cures. Again if I might so bold as to quote another"for the right rerasons". A twelve volt conversion is not the panecea for your starting woes, however there are many good reason for a twelve volt conversion like bright lights for those special night maneuvers, running twelve volt accessories like pumps, sprayers or the blender for making frozen concoctoins on those hot days.

completely rebuilt my 2n and left it 12 volt. dont have any problems. however it was a cobbed up job before the rebuild. got new 1 wire alt and wired it right. had the local starter shop go into the new alt and fix it to where it excites around 800 rpms.
