I recently had my motor completely rebuilt with new pistons, rings, complete valve job and had the head planed and the block decked. I replaced the studs in the head with bolts that were approx. 1/4" longer than the studs. I started the tractor tonight and it had a knock in what sounded like the upper end of the motor. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!! !
Thanks Mark

Sounds to me like you may have over fixed it!

The pistons may very well be hitting the head if you have milled the head and the block. I would take the head back off and see if it has marked the pistons. If it has then throw away the head and go buy another one that has not been milled and don't mill (fix) it. This should give you enough clearance to prevent the pistons from striking the head.

Or you could raise each piston to top dead center and file off some of the dome of each piston.

Could also be a piston sleeve moving, and hitting the head.

Several years ago a loud knock developed in my '52 8N. The crankshaft was bumping the oil pick up tube. Had to remove the front end to drop the oil pan and rebend the oil pick up tube. Hopefully, someone on the board can tell you how to rule this out without dropping the oil pan.

On mine it was the valves hitting. I put a dot of play dough on the pistons and valves to check it. When I took the head back off the play dough was flattened on a couple and on number 4 exhaust was stuck to the head.
