I have never owned a Ford tractor before, but came across this 8N with sherman step-up transmission which is all original including the paint which is starting to show some surface rust. The sheet metal is straight. It has been stored indoors. Hour meter shows 1500 hours, everything appears to work and runs good. Don't have the serial number or know the year.

Asking price is $4500 firm. It seems high to me, but I do not know what these machines are worth. What do you think?

Thanks for all the good advice. The reason I was interested was this last spring I bought a '67 MF 135 for the same amount of money that had 1200 hours and was mostly original. It is nice to work on a tractor which has not been modified or 'jury rigged'.

An 8N would be able to handle the simple tasks I need doing even with the lack of live hydraulics.

It looks like I should let this one go. Too much $.

Thanks again, you are one great group of people gathered here.

Well, if you're mechanically inclined, or like me, (dumb as a brick with engines, but I have access to the world's greatest N forum), you could post an ad in the Classifieds for an N in any shape. I did, and got a running 1948 8N with Sherman Step Up for 700 American. Sure, it needs an engine rebuild, but a total of 1200 for it sure beats 4500 for the one you saw!

Good luck,

I'd agree with the others here. At$4500 ( U.S. I presume)I shouldn't see the word rust anywhere in your sentence. You seem to be describing my '50 in the general condition. I paid approx $3000 Canadian. I don't have the Sherman but I bought a 5 foot snowblower, finish mower and a 6 foot blade and a 3 point tote box with it for $5000 (Can) for the whole package tractor included plus manuals and a bunch of accessories. I figured I payed all it was worth ( that is to say I didn't get a discount)That's about $3100 U.S. Regional differences aside $4500 U.S. will be a hard sell unless this tractor is clean as a whistle IMO StuK

Depending on where in the World it is and if it is truly a great original it may just may bring $3500, those folks are asking E-Bay prices, best they try sell it there.

Neal:

Larry8N has given you good sound advice. Honestly for $4500 you can buy a tractor that seriuosly elicpses any 8N. I'm not trying to start a fight, BUT for a WORKING tractor, there are a lot of alternative tractors to choose from for that same amount of money. I believe something is worth whatever someone is willingly to pay for it, and to the right person it may be a dream come true. Analyze your needs, after all you'll have to pay for it, and use it.

Neal,

The only way that tractor would be worth that much would be if it was one of the last 100 or so made. AND then only to a rabid collector, not an average joe looking for a tractor to use. The proofmeter (hour/tach) started with mid year 1950. The side mount distributor started the same time several thousand tractors earlier. The last 8N's had the .090 cast iron sleeves which you can tell by the engine having the raised cast on letters 8N-C on the bulge where the starter is mounted. Earlier side distributor engines will have 8N-B.

Sherman step-up is not as desirable as the step-down or the combination up-down. So it would not add that much value, in my opinion. Does the proofmeter work? How sure are you that the hours shown are accurate? Could it have turned over once, twice??

I would bet that the seller will have to wait a long time to sell it at the price he's asking. OR luck onto someone gulliable. $2K to $3K is the range here in northern Virginia, often with an implement or two, in average running condition.

Regards,
Larry

For that money you can get a later model such as the hundred or thousand series that have full time hydraulics - a MAJOR drawback to the N's - and if you get the right model hundred series, they have live PTO. Be careful since the live PTO was not standard on all hundred series tractors. LIve PTO means you can push the clutch in half way and stop the rear wheels while the PTO still turns. VERY helpful when brush mowing in heavy brush or even weeds.

Neal, A very good original will be worth more than all but the most thorough resto. That said, I see the price trend on N's starting down here in the North East. They have been up...stupidly so! A cpuple of local dealers have a few good solid (nothing too special) 8n's for $1900-$2200 now where they were $2600-$3200 a year ago. We have adjusted the prices on ours accordingly. That said, someone will probably want a very good original bad enough to pay $4500...the Sherman helps, are you sur it is only a step up, not an up down? A later 8n with side distributer adds some value, and a proofmeter(a tach which makes it a '52) adds more. Probably a $3000 tractor if it is as good AND original as you say. Pete

Seems high to me. I just saw an ad for one for $4500 with a fresh "once over". This 8N came with a loader and back blade and a custom cab.
