I have recently had my engine block decked and the head planed. When I put the head back on with a new gasket it had a anti-freeze leak at one of the head bolts. It was bolt #18 in the torque process. I purchased a new head gasket for $14 and replaced the other. Nothing has changed. Still leaking. Any ideas????? ????? ?
Thanks Mark

Mark, Assuming you are putting the engine back together after a rebuild. (you did say - "engine block decked and the head planed") Have you checked to see that this removal of metal material may have an effect on "open" valve clearance with the head? Just a thought. Jim

Almost all if not all of the head bolt holes are drilled through to the water jackets and should be coated with a sealer. I have in the past always used liquid teflon to seal these because it is non-hardening so it won't be a problem when you re-torque the head. My local machine shop has suggested #2 permatex which is also non-hardening and is the nasty black tar like stuff. In addition to sealing the bolts it may help to keep them from rusting too. I have gotten into the habbit of coating the back of freeze plugs with sealer too for that reason.

Where did you get the gasket? You may want to check the New Holland dealer as I was just quoted under $8 for a genuine gasket.

Good luck

Ken

Mark did you put some RTV on the threads before you installed them? Im not sure which holes go into the water jacket but I know some do for sure. Hope this helps you out.
