While driving last night, I happened to be behind a pickup truck with a window mounted American Flag that blew off, mounting clip and all. I slowed down, expecting that the driver of the truck would stop, but he did not. So I pulled over, and at a safe break in traffic, I went out and retrieved the flag. Not knowing what I should do with the flag (every school child heard that a flag that touches the ground should be burned), I did some internet research. What I found was a very informative page which I have linked below.

Please give it a read to make sure your flag is properly displayed.

I had no idea there were so many different rules and regulations on the U.S. flag, it's pretty neat to read. Thanks for the site.

Our local Scout Troops here collect and properly dispose of American Flags when the time comes. It's a great thing and it is done with the respect that is fitting for such an important responsibility...and the Fire Dept. is there too...a great thing to see and be a part of.

You may want to check in your are to see if there is something similar.

Well...that is the question. I read the federal laws pertaining to the flag, and the issue of burning is brought up only when the flag is "unfit for display" and then it says only that it is to be disposed of in a dignified manner, preferably by burning.

The flag did indeed land on the ground, but it seems to be in like new condition. Although it is a novelty more than likely produced after the September 11, 2001 attacks, this seems like a time in our history when more than ever the flag needs to be preserved.

Take for instance the tattered and torn flag recovered from the top of the World Trade Center. It has flown at the World Series, has been on display at countless funerals for those lost in the attack, and is right now orbiting the earth in he Space Shuttle and International Space Station. Certainly its condition could be described as unfit for display, but as an American flag, it stands for much more right now.

The WTC flag has been a hot topic. Since it is such poor condition it should be destroyed...however it has tremendous meaning. There is/was a big debate on what to do. Las I knew there was a ceremony that did burn a small square of the flag and the rest of the flag was preserved.
