pulled the head off and rotated engine and noticed valves were opening and closing while pistons were in middle of cylinders. thought i got it close to correct position tonite but i noticed at the bottom of the intake stroke the intake valve was still open and didn't close completely till the piston moved upwards about .260 thousands. should the intake valve be closed as soon as the piston starts upward or does the 1/4 inch travel sound about right? thanks for all your help, i am learning alot

Jeepman..... .that 1/4" upwards travel of the piston on the compression stroke before the intake valve closes completely is known as "overlap". The incoming charge of mixture has momentium and will continue to fill the cylinder through the open intake valve even though the piston has started on the compression stroke.

As I said earlier, its rather obvious when the camshaft is outta time and you know to look for it.

There have been reports of a second very faint camshaft witness mark that does time up with the crankshaft witness mark. But I can't sware to it, you'll have to look very hard. But sounds like you've got a handle on it now..... ...Dell
