Well gentlemen this rookie is over his head at the moment. As I am waiting for various manuals I will pose my question here.

Per discussion last night on the forum here I was advised to use jumper cables and a 12V batt. to test the starter for "spin". I was not successful initially, however I now "figerd" it out and my starter motor is ok.

Don't celebrate quite yet. Upon ever so gently removing my starter I heard something inside the ring gear "chamber" go "clink". I now have a neat little stack of shims and a bent twisted retaining ring type thing sitting on the floor of the "chamber". I appears that the retaining ring may have failed, and upon removing the starter the rest fell off. I am thinking this failure lead to the pinion gear not being able to engage the fly wheel.

What do I do now? Will I have to break this to my wife? Worse yet will I have to split the 2N?

Bill..... ...there's alot of N's running 'round with extra starter bendix parts innna the clutch housing. Plenty of room so you really don't have to fish 'em out if'n you don't wannna.

Do what John sez and get the new improved "clutch" style starter drive, you'll be glad you did.

You will have to grind out a "notch" in the starter hole at about 1-2 o'clock to get it past the flywheel ring. Doesn't hurt the strength and makes it so much eazier to pull the starter with eather style bendix and besides when you got the starter attached and bolted up, nobody can tell..... ...Dell

When I replaced the bendix (with the new one I got from local FNH dealer), it came with service bulletin outlining the "notching" required.
Three nights later and still no starter installed, I split the tractor.

Seemed like a lot of work, but in the end was easier than trying to work the new bendix past the ring gear. (Every time I was close I would some how manage to kick the bendix back apart and then there was no way it would go in!)

Unfortunately, I've been there too. The new drive thats sold at FNH is actually a larger diameter than the original and requires enlarging the hole to get it in there. On most tractors it works ok, but I've run into 2 that had a heavier casting inside the transmission and required a lot of grinding back in there too before the bendix would go in. Yours must be like that. The new style drive in the photo I posted came from somewhere other than FNH (sorry, can't remember where)and it is actually a smaller diameter than the original type drive. It slips right in without any grinding at all and works great. FNH should switch suppliers and start selling this one and save everyone a lot of work and headaches.

When you pick up the new starter drive, make sure it looks like the new style on the right in this photo. The old style are completely and totally worthless as far as I'm concerned.

1.Bill, purchase a new starter bendix.
2.Use a long extension magnet tool to recover the junk parts from your clutch housing.
3.You should not have to tell the wife.
You should not have to split the N.
good luck,
ray
