I've recently inhereted a '53 Jubilee that has been in the family for about 30 years. Its been parked for a few years and now I'm starting to work on it.

Anyway, the '53 was in action bush-hogging when my father hit a stump - the bush-hog clutch didn't give and something broke - locking the tractor up. Now the wheels won't turn, even with the clutch dis-engaged - we have to pick up the rear with the dozer to move it around. Something similar happened several years ago and turned out to be the countershaft drive gear broke. Sound feasible for the symptoms I've got now?

If so, how do I go about pulling the countershaft? Do I have to pull the tractor apart? or can I do this from the access plates?

Thanks,
Ken

If he was bushhogging in 2nd gear it has busted the gear into and part of it has probably gotten hung up in the other gears.
the tractor will have to be broken at the from of the trans and the rear of the trans. Nothing will come out of the transmission till both ends are open and the bearing housings are removed.
Firs the shift mechanism will all have to be removed befor any of the gears and or shafts can be removed. It would be best to take a few polaroid pictures of things as you progress. A picture is worth a thousand cuss words.(Old Chinese saying)

Pull the transmission top cover, the one with the shift lever on it. Drain the tranny fluid. If the transmission has a problem you can usually spot it in this manner. If you have a countershaft problem it will require a front and rear split. Good luck, ray
