Hope you can help. My 9n came to me with a 12 volt alt. It has now quit on me. When this happens in one of my trucks I just get another or have it repaired locally. Which ever is cheaper. But in this case as you know, there is no telling where this one came from. Is there a code on these things that will help me know what I have? I have not taken it off yet. Since it still runs on the battery just fine, Ive been running it a little until I decide What to do.

Thanks Dale in VA.

Dale, I put a 12 volt system on my 8N and used a delco, GM, alternator, with an internal voltage regulator. They work great. You can remove yours and take it to a local auto parts store, like, AutoZone. They will test your alternator for free. If its shot you should be able to buy a new one there for pretty cheap. Make sure that the mounts are the same. Also, I was able to swap pulleys off my old 6 volt generator to the new alternator as the shafts were the same diameter. The belt on the old tractors is alot wider than the pulley which comes on the new alternators. You should be able to buy a rebuilt one and trade in the old one for cheaper than buying a new one.

Good luck.

Dale if I were you I would take the alternator to a parts store and let'em match it up as close as possible. the only difference in these thangs, as far as I know, is the location of the plug and hot stud. You can probably get 1 for $30.00 or so.

Before you replace it, take it off and take it apart and run some light sandpaper around the comutator and ckeck the brushes; are they clean, are they long enough? It doesn't take a lot of dirt to hold a brush of the comutater. Spray everything down with breakclean or contact cleaner. When you put it together, there is usually a couple little holes where you can stick a couple pices of wire to keep the brushes up untill you get the endcap on, then pull the wires out. If it workes, you've saved about $90, if it dosen't, you've tried. Have a nice turkey

Sorry but an alternator does not have a comutator. That is a generator that has the comutator. An alternator has slip rings.

Look at what you got first.

Some one put a Nissan 12v. alt. It doesn't have the ( what ever it is that kicks the regulator in by it's self) So I have a pull knob under the dash. That has a Fuse in it. When I find that it's not charging, I check the fuse first.. 100% of the time, that's all it is. And I found that by accident. Your troubles may not be as bad as it seems.

Happy Thanksgiving
