Ok, new points properly gapped, timing set TDC like it says in the manual, new condenser, new coil, new plugs also properly gapped, new plug wires. Carb is recently rebuilt. At each point in this process, I got improvement. With a new coil, I got spark. With new points and condenser and timing set, I got it started. With the rebuild on carb, it even stays running. With new wires and plugs, I can rev it up, but when I do, it chug-chug-chugs slowly to speed and when I encounter a small hill, etc, it loses power and then chug-chugs back to speed slowly when I back off. Yes, I set the carb as outlined in the manual for both idle and main; adjusting it doesn't amke a difference. Yes, I checked the screens (all three) in the fuel line. Whn it hits a hill, I can see the governor kicking in to give more gas. If this was my lawn mower, I'd be able to fool with the carb adjustment and get it running I think. COuld I have bad points or something? I'm ready to give up and call a pro.

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be bad plugs. Check to see if you have spark in each. If the engine will rev high when not under load and then faulters under load that may be a carb adjustment or fuel flow problem. Let some gas run into a can as you play with the inlet knob. You may find your not getting enough. Mine needs to be open to the reserve setting or I don't get enough gas. Also check your carb out good. You'll read about a lot of newly rebuilt carbs that are not quite right. Try upping the fuel mix, a fuel starved engine will sputter and buck.
By the way, when you log on to this board your getting tips from the most knowledgable N people in the world! (myself not included) You'll figure it out! I keep telling yourself "Fixing it is half the fun!"

Sounds like you got the ignition wires crossed. Firing order is 1,2,4,3. Believe it or not, the ol'N in good condition will actually run with miswired sparkies..... .Dell

Hummm.....if you see your govenor rod move to try to give you more gas (open the throttle) and you still don't pickup the RPM's, then I would suspect that the centrifical advance of your distributor is not working somehow. Which on a frontmount, you will have to remove the distributor to a work bench to muck around with it..... .Dell

You may have a cracked or leaking intake manifold. Internally or externally. Spray WD 40 around the manifold and see if the tractor rpm picks up. Do you have your float set correctly? Is your timing gear a fiber type and failing? Are you getting any black smoke at tail pipe? Will tractor run better for a short time when choked? Start with the manifold and float height.

The float is set at 1/4". How do I tell if I have a worn timing gear?

Sometimes a gear will jump a few teeth. The engine will start and run smooth but will have no power past idle. Try reworking your distributor again, advance etc. Are you sure the power circuit in the carb is cleaned properly? Is the float binding?
