Look What I Found at Sears Hardware...

A few months back, someone posted a link to the NorthernTool website featuring a product which was a tachometer and hour meter all in one, using only a wire lead from a spark plug wire. I had thought about getting one, then the same person who posted the link wrote again saying how disatisfied he was with the product. Well, the other day I was in a Sears Hardware store and....

I saw this hour meter behind the service desk. I was getting a little tired of guessing how long the engine had been run so I took a gamble on it.

Instalation was easy enough - wrap one end of the wire around a spark plug wire 4 -5 times and secure with a cable tie. Then place the other end of the wire in a channel on the back side of the meter. Done.

So far, so good - my wife said I let out a small shriek when the first 1/10 of an hour was displayed.

Thanks for the heads up. I also was surfing and found that they sell online. Also saw some neat tach/hour meters and racing tachs. Check out this link www.sendec.com , click on the meter picture.

I have used the Northern Tool one on two tractors with no complaints. I have one on my single cyl briggs tractor that had to be ordered for a 4 cycle engine. It is a tach and an hour meter and I never had a problem with it. The other one I recently bought is similar but universal and can be programmed for what type of engine that it is connected to. These little things are great. I attached it to my dash with double stick tape. Dont run the wire through the tube, it will pick up noise from the other plugs. Just run it to the number 4 plug and you should be in business. BTW it cost me 36 bux and was worth it.

This morning I tested the hour meter and it times out fine : 0.1 hours at 6 minutes engine running.

The company that makes the product is SenDEC corp., 57 Waln Street, Wellsboro PA 16901. The device is called the Flash Alert. At 25 hour intervals it flashes a message in the display saying change oil. The package states "For all tractors and riding mowers."

On their web page it states that the hour meter is for, "All gasoline engines, regardless of the number of cylinders, firing order or engine speed."

Below is a link to their web page.

The meter runns off of its own battery so I suppose the answer is neither. The tractor is 6 volt mostly original.

Great Ed, but what is the little woman going to say day after tomorrow when the meter shows 14,152 hours and 40,000 rpm????? Good luck

Good Question - I guess I have only 1/2 of that problem to worry about since this one is just hours - no tach.

Looks Good!

I'd bet the hardest part was running the wire thru the wire harness conduit!

as you can see by looking carefully at the second photo, there are very few wires running through the conduit. It is on the hood-off list. You see, the fuel tank is someone's home made and the radiator has a slight leak, and the crankshaft pully is a little bent, so when any one of those gets to the point where they are not usable, then we will fix the items under the hood, including a new wiring harness and plug wires, fed through the conduit.

Well what's the exact product brand name, and the cost? Are you still happy with it today? Is it accurate and to your liking?

I haven't used it much since installing it, but it seems to still be working and the installation was very easy. Since it was designed for single cylinder lawn tractors, I want to test it to see if the clock is accurate for a four cylinder engine as well. I don't see that there should be a difference but I will check anyway - I will take a look at the brand name tomorrow and get back to you

If it was made for single cylinder lawn tractors, then it may not be accurate. You may have to multiply the hours indicated on the unit by 2 to find the acutal hours on your N. The reason is due to the inductive pickup that the hourmeter uses. On the N, the plug fires every other revolution of the crankshaft. On a small engine (Briggs, Tecumseh, etc) the plug fires on EVERY revolution of the crankshaft. Thus, since the hourmeter may be calibrated for a Briggs type engine, you'll have to multiply the indicated hours by 2.

That's assuming that the hourmeter measures time by counting crankshaft revolutions (counts how many times the plug fires).

I guess it's also possible that it just logs time in "real time" while the engine is runing. Time will tell :-)

Hi

On a 4 cycle engine spark at any given
plug will occur at every 2 crankshaft revolution
on 4 stroke one cylinder engine spark occurs
every 2 revolution.

One turn one spark is true for 2 cycle engines.

Device should be realtively accurate.

Good motoring..

Sorry Joe, but Brian is right on this one! --- Engines such as B&S, and Tecumseh and other 4-cycle "small engines" whose spark is triggered by the CRANKshaft position will fire once per revolution. They fire at the top of the compression stroke and again, at the top of the exhaust stroke. --- Engines whose spark is triggered by the CAMshaft position will only fire once per every two revolutions of the crank.

That is true Bruce but for this hour meter it won't matter. All they do is sense that the engine is running and start an electronic clock. When the engine stops, the little sensor wire detects that and stops the internal clock. The device just keeps track of the accumulated hours of running. The discussion going is regarding a tachometer and Ed is refering to an hour meter only, I think. (The pictures won't load for me today)
