I just tried to convert my 1948 8N to an alternator and am haveing some problems. Have been running 12 volt(no chargeing circuit) for a while but was given an alternator that I thought would work. It is suppose to be off an early 70's GM. When I went to hook it up the plug terminal was labled F and R not P1 & P2. The Marker light will not go out and the thing will not charge. How do I tell if I have an internal voltage regulator or need to add one ? Do I wire the side marker light to the F or the R terminal? Thanks for any help. I have looked through the archives and am more confused.

THANKS. Mark

Having problems finding the conversion page. Please assistance. The directions which came with my kit looks like it is lacking some detail. Looking for additional assistance.

Thanks
Jim

Brian: Just looked at your wiring info.- very good job. Anyone who wants to convert to a 12 volt system should print out your information.
Thanks for taking the time to do it.

Brian: Your page is the one I used for the info to rewire my 8N. The problem was that I have the wrong alternator.. I am going to try to put a voltage regulator from a 65 Dodge (Two Wires) in and see if I can get it to work. Thanks for a great page and the wire drawing. They helped a lot..

Thanks Mark

My advice would be to get rid of that Altinator and get a Delco 10 -17SI.... The terminals that you refer to are F for field and R for relay. They are to be used with an external VR. GM used an Idiot light and a resistance in paralell with the idot light and it would connect to terminal number four of the VR.... For the cost of the VR, you could probably get a rebuilt Altinator with the built in VR.
Happy Motoring

Thanks Claus. I thought I had a free alternator but i guess it can be a trade in on a newer one .

Thanks again.... Mark (AR)

Claus is right -- this is an early Delco alternator that requires an external voltage regulator. It's easier to get a different alternator than use this one.

At least you won't pay the core charge!

Maybe you can get a better deal at a salvage yard though.

Jim : Saw an old post about useing A voltage regulator for a 65 Dodge and at $10 it is worth a try. I will let you know if it works or if I burn up the alternator...

Thanks, Mark (AR)

Mark- Sir! Sweat it not... That Chrysler regulator will run 'em all! It don't care, it has no brand loyalty hang ups, it just reads system voltage and regulates alternator field current to make it come out right- 14.8 to 15.2 volts. It'll probably do it for many years.

Very important is to get your ignition switched wiring connection power feed to the regulator before any coil primary dropping resistors. That regulator needs to "see" system voltage. Also, run a little ground wire, from the alternator's ground stud to the case on that regulator, just to make sure you don't get screwed up by a ground path thru a bunch of old rusty sheet metal.

Good luck, IHank
