Screaming down the interstate today, I look to the right and see an N with a for sale sign on the frontage road. So I take the next exit and weave my way back to where I saw it. Owners not home. Serial number not visible, but the oval radius rods tell me it's a 2N. Might be a replace ment engine. Castings are gray except the head which is red. Hood is blue. Key switch is to the side of the steering column. There's a big black knob coming out of the dash. I followed the cable to the right side of the tranny where it goes into the casing. Is this a cable shifted Sherman? Called the owner later (he called it a 9N) but forgot to ask him about the black knob. He wants $3200. Tractor comes with a trip bucket loader and a back blade. I'm not buying it, but I have the phone number if anyone else is looking.

Yeah Jim, that's a cable shifter for the Sherman unit, I got one on my '50 8N. I keep mine oiled good, it works well. Tractor Supply Co. sells a replacement 8N shift knob that also fits the cable end perfectly. Now mine looks better that it did with the old knob.

I have a 1940 9N with a Sherman cable shift. Has been in my family for over 50 years. After I heard about the cable rusting issue last year I oiled the cable. Works great!!

Sounds like it to me. That's where mine is, sans the big black knob. That appears to have broken off some time around '48 or '49. And yes, naturally it's also frozen in the high position. (in from what i understand) I hadn't heard of any other feller's tractor with the cable shift... thanks... jess
