I just got back from a local farm equip. dealer where I bought the 9N it is a beauty checked it out well and will have plenty of questions for you guys I'm sure. Which brings me to #1 on the grill there is a small metal tag with "fergeson system" on it I know this has to do with the 3 point but how long where these tags used my uncle has an 8N with no tag is the 9 a fairly early one because if it is it is in great shape for an old gal. wish I could post photos but I am too stupid to do so over the net. I will have to go to the serial# section and check her out. thanks everyone who takes the time to contribute to this site it is great. anyone in the south central PA region Jeff R proud owner

Welcome to the club. Watch out, buying Ford tractors can be habit forming. Where in south central PA do you live? I'm in northern York county.

Congratulations! You will fall in love with the old tractor and come to regard it as a trusted friend. On the Ford badge in front, does it also have a small 2N stamped on it? Make sure you post your serial number and look it up to find out exactly what you have.
Happy Tractoring!!!

Only the 9N's (built from 1939 to 1941) and the 2N's (from '42 to '47) had the "Ferguson" badge. Like Ed says, when old Henry died, Henry II figured the "hand-shake agreement" between his grandfather and Harry Ferguson was null and void. The new 8N was modified to provide a loophole in the agreement, and Ford dropped the Ferguson affiliation. The epic court battle that ensued is told better elsewhere. On a lighter note, enjoy your new tractor! One of the best things about them is discovering just how much they can do for you.

reference "handshake agreement" - Harry Fergusson and Henry Ford had an agreement, purported to be by handshake alone, regarding licensing of the 3 point hitch. This agreement was dissolved by Henry's Son after Henry's Death. Ford added the position/draft control selector and claimed the system as its own. As the rumor goes, the 8N was supposed to be a 7N but refitting for the new transmission to cut Fergusson out of the deal took time. The result was a lawsuit which never completely compensated Fergusson for his invention.
