1941 9N...a loud pop, and now nothing...

Can someone please help?? The 9N had been running just fine until yesterday, when I tried to start it up. When I depressed the starter switch, the engine turned over about half a turn and then I heard this loud pop from somewhere under the hood (couldn't actually see where it came from since I was seated behind the wheel). Now nothing happens when I push the switch. It's been previously converted to 12v and the 12v coil was replaced about 2 months ago. I have examine it and it "looks ok" (nothing burned, etc). I haven't tried other culprits yet, and the archives contain over 2700 hits under "ignition". Any suggestions would be gratefully received. Thanks!!

I had that problem just yesterday and it turned out to be the starter switch. I'm guessing it happened because of the higher current/voltage from having just moments before installed a 12 volt conversion. I was able to fix my switch without replacement. I drilled some holes in it which allowed me to access the contacts and clean them, which cured my ails. good luck

David,

First I would try to turn the engine by hand to make sure it is not stuck. Mine made a loud pop once and it turned out to be the starter contactor. To check it, put tractor in NEUTRAL. reach in to the starter switch and short the two bolts together with a screwdriver. If the starter turns, the replace the switch. Otherwise good luck.

Another thing that can make a loud pop is a broken distributor rotor button. However, the motor should still turn over when you push the starter button, it just won't run. Since you say that nothing happens when you push the starter, I don't think this is your problem, but worth a quick look. Good luck.

David..... ..This could be anything, I flunked mindreading, just ask my ex-wife.

You could have "hydraulic piston lock", pull all your sparkplugs and make certain you don't have water or gas stopping the engine from rotating. It'll just pump out the sparkplug hole if'n anything is in there.

You could have jambed or broken something on your starter. You'll have to hold your tongue "jess-sew" to get it out. Put some 5/16 NC nuts on the long starter bolts so it doesn't fall apart before you wiggle it out.

12 volt ignition coil should have nothing to do with your "pop". But might have something to do with breaking a starter drive. ..... ..Dell

Check the battery cable connections. If all are clean, bright and tight try jumpering directly to the starter after being double sure the transmission is in neutral.

Here's something that happened to me. The starter drive gear fractured and jammed in the ring gear which locked the engine up. You could check this by putting the tractor in gear and manually rock the rear wheels. If you see that the engine is turning then this isn't your problem.
