Installing Front Crankshaft Pulley

I'm replacing the front engine pulley on my '51 8N. The new one is a good "tap on" fit but I'm concerned about how it bottoms. Looking back in the hole, the key looks ok but it looks like the head of the bolt/starting crank ratchet bottoms on the end of the crank before it touches the pulley. I could make a large ID washer that would slip over the crankshaft and push against the pulley but don't know if what stops the pulley would take the force.

Any Ideas?

Gary,

The crank pulley has a slot that fits over a woodruff key in the crank. This woodruff key also fits into the timing gear. The crank pulley will come against this gear which bottoms against the crank. You should be able to tighten the bolt and not worry. The bolt is 5/8" fine thread (I believe).

I bet that you bought a new pulley, and did not get an original from a junk yard. The new ones won't fit with your old crankshaft bolt which has the crank dog on it. You're right when you say it doesn't bottom out on the pulley correctly. You are going to have to fashion some sort of washer that makes up the difference, or go with another crank bolt, which won't have the dog on it. Maybe a thick machine washer ? My $.02
