I was waiting for a signal one day last week and glanced over at the stock trailer in the next lane which was providing me with a bit of shade when I noticed through the slats that they weren’t carrying cattle or horses but rather an NAA (or?) and five or six bales of hay.
I could only see parts of the tractor but I could see that it was a well weathered red and gray, had rear wheels and transmission identical to the ones on my 8N, and spark plugs in the side of the head. Couldn’t see the top of the hood or the front. The truck towing the trailer had a ranch name on the door — this was definitely a working tractor.
Earlier the same day I saw what I think was an 8N on a flat trailer but it was painted a strange color — like maybe part of a corporation yard’s equipment.
I cross California’s central valley often and it’s rare to see an ‘N’, even on some of the secondary roads. Mostly late model huge green machines and a few red ones just to break the monotony I guess. There are always a handful of the yellow Caterpillar crawlers of course. There is a later model (still red and gray) Ford yard ornament that I pass by and it hasn’t moved in over three years. Looks like it would run with little effort but who knows?
Three ‘N’s in one day (four if you count my own) was a bit like going to a show.

Hope you all had a good “N’ day too!

in ontario where i live, there are quite a few ns still working.i see them at least a couple times a week doing what they are supose to do.ie. scidding wood, plowing fields [small fields] pulling hay wagons, bush hogging ect.
i only know of one that is restored back to original, its a 9n. its a beaut. he doesnt use it for working, but does have a 8n that he uses almost every day.
at any given day you could find a n for sale in my area.
a few years back i even saw a 8n towing one of those green machines back to the farm. i wish i had my camera.
its nice to see a 50+- year old tractor still working.
my 41 9n had its 60th birthday this year and i decided to retire her untill i rebuild the engine and restore her. im working on the sheet metal right now and this winter ill rebuild the engine. it should be good for another 60 years.
to all the 41 9ns out there, HAPPY BIRTHDAY AND HERE IS TO ANOTHER 60 YEARS OF GOOD WORK

Glad to hear you had a nice day. I always take a second look while driving in case I might see some grey hiding somewhere in a farmyard. I have even stopped a few times and inquired about an N that I have seen sitting in someone's field. Funny, the reaction I get is the same everytime. "hey, you got one too? Well ya see I've had this baby since..." These folk are all of the same mind. This was and is a great piece of tractor history. I was hauling water with my 2N on the weekend when this ol' boy pulls up beside me and stops. I thought he might say something but he just smiled and looked us up and down noddin his head in approval. It appeared that he was remembering some good times. I don't think I have ever been so proud to own my tractor as I was that day. Just my feelings...Dave

I'm sure they are lurking everywhere — like in the back orchard or in or behind the old barn. But one ranch that had an NAA is now abandoned. They took all the equipment. Most of the valley I pass through is planted in huge acreages and they seem to use the green machines for everything from pumps to plowing. I did see a kid on an old red tractor having a fun time discing his yard. I think most of the ranchettes are way back off the beaten path.

N — joy.
