I have a side mounted distributor, and would like to convert it over to 12 volt system. Is there a cheaper way, than paying $180 to $250 for this?
I think the biggest problem I would have is mounting an alternator in place of the generator.
Thanks
Brent

Brent and Larry,

I agree with Michael and Dave. A 6 volt system in good shape will start as easily as a 12 volt system. I would only convert if there was a specific need for 12 volts such as needing to run a 12 volt accessory.

6 volt system are more suseptible to corrosion and bad connections than 12 volts, so make sure you connections are "clean, bright, and tight". Also, make sure your battery cables are 0 gauge or bigger. I got mine at Advance Auto Parts. The auto cables you can buy at Wal Mart aren't big enough. Also, use copper core spark plug wires, not resistor wires for cars. I don't think you'll notice the noise in you radio on the tractor (grin).

Just my opinion,
Danny

Check the archives and you will find many posts by Dell and others describing the few pros and many cons to converting to 12 volt. If you are having starting issues, the 12 volt system is only a band aid for it. A properly maintained 6 volt system will easily start the tractor when it sits outside and the temperature is -20 (mine does exactly that).
Just my .10 cents worth...

Brent and Larry, There is only 2 reasons to go to 12 volt. 1 it was that way when you got the tractor. 2 it is a work tractor and 12 volt is needed for accessories. If you're 6 volt system is as it should be you should have no problems. All conections clean bright and tight. Also be sure you have the heavy 2 gauge battery cables.
If you have access to a welder to make brackets you can use a GM single wire alternator model S10.Click on the link below to go to a wireing diagram.

I am considering the same thing as my 8n is hard to start. Before I do that I am going to try to figure out how to get it to start on 6 volt. Hopefully someone on this boad will give me some help. I'm going to start by new spark plug wires dist.cap and rotor. If that don't work I'll try a new coil. There is a way to go 12 volt cheaper though if you want to. You have to have some mechanical ability though. A guy at work was telling me he did it and it involved getting the right delco alternator and making a bracket. You also have to do some wiring changes since the delco alternator has the voltage regulator built in. You can do it but would be better to get the kit in my opinion. Unless you are pretty sharp. Good luck, Larry
