King pin -broken distributer lug help here please

I saw a message recently about how to keep the front wheel (on the right side) from moving up and breaking the lug on the distributer. Bottom left facing the radiator. I beleive that it said something about welding a piece on it . Please Help

Bob,

I知 an ok welder but would not choose to start with that much of a permanent fix. I would start with a 1/8 inch thick piece of metal not 1/4. Here痴 a way to find out.

Jack up the center part of the tractor underneath the front axel pivot until you can pivot the axels the full travel. I would remove both front wheels after lifting them just off the ground, this will let you move the axels without razing the front too high. Lay the 1/8 inch thick piece of metal on top of the saddle where the axel comes down against it on the left side. Go to the distributor side of the tractor and push the axel up until it stops and look at the clearance. If it is enough then use JBweld two part epoxy and glue the piece of metal in place. I知 sure the JBweld can stand up to the occasional bottoming of the axel. If it comes loose then try the next idea.

To fix the axle so it will quit breaking the distributor cap, you should first drive the left front wheel up on a stand etc or jack up the left front wheel until the right front wheel is about to leave the ground.

Then weld a piece of flat iron about 1/4" thick and wide and long enough to cover the place on the front axle-radiator support which strikes the axle when the right front wheel is raised when uneven ground is contacted by the right front wheel and is raised to it's maximum. You will be able to see the place to weld the flat iron. This will prevent the axle going up high enough to strike the distributor cap. The axle will still have plenty of travel left to be practicle.

Fix the slack in the center pivot pin if you prefer but this is a whole lot easier and faster and the hole in the axle may already be too out of shape to hold a new buching anyway.

Just keep an eye on the pin so it does not cut all the way through and drop the front end of the tractor. This is a very rare thing to happen but is possible. If it does the hood and radiator etc.will have damage.

dont patch it fix it the center pin and bushin are not expencive and it is very ezy to do ya just need a big hammer to drive the pin out .
do it right the first time and ya wont be sorry,

I hate to disagree with smokie, but you could be opening up a nasty box of worms. That happend me on my restoration. I ended up getting salvaged axle parts. Like Mr. Zane said
check for free play. Remember some of these machines have over 50 years of use, and the king pin does not get any lube, so you have metal to metal contact. Something has to give.
