I hope someone is reading tonight. I just picked up my "new" 51 8N. It all looks pretty original and still has a six volt system on it.It will not start and will need a jump/charge. Question: How do I hook up the terminals? I am new at this and have never worked with this type sytem. Does red clamp from charger go on the wire leading to the starter? Question 2; The guy who started it may not have jumped it correctly either? Where would the damage , if any occur? Last question (I swear) if I am still having starting trouble what should I replace and in what order.
Sorry this is so long but I hope you can all remember doing this the first time. Man, I love that tractor, this is gonna be fun.
thanks
tom

When jump starting an N tractor with 12 volts it not necessary to hook the 12 volts to the 6 volts battery at all. As a matter of fact I strongly reccomend against it.
Instead hook the 12 volts directly to the frame of the tractor for the ground and with the transmission in neutral and out of the way of the wheels of the tractor so you don't get run over touch the other cable from the 12 volt source to the post on the starter.
By doing it this way you don't even have to worry about the polarity of the batterys or which cable you have to ground or positive to the frame or the starter as the 6 volt systme is not intered into at all with the 12 volts. Just turn on the switch and touch the hot cable to the starter post and it will go.

I would get some starting fluid and spray into the air intake before attempting to start. Turn the ignition switch on and hit the jumber wire to the starter post. If it will start on starter fluid sprayed in the air cleaner you have problems in the fuel system. If it won't try to start with starter fluid you have ignition problems and should start from the battery and follow the path of the current to the coil and then the points and condenser etc. Sparkplugs etc.

Please do some detective work first. Look at the battery and identify by the + and - if your tractor has the original positive (+) wire going to ground. Second, do you have a volt meter? If the battery was damaged by hooking up a jump backwards, the meter could even show a backwards reading, though this is unlikely. Red from the charger is positive so that goes to the + terminal of the battery. You can jump start the tractor off a 12 volt system. Hook the red lead from the good battery to a good ground on the frame somewhere, then use the negative lead from the good battery to the hookup point on the starter as you try to start it. As always, if something doesn't look or act right, back up and check things out carefully.
