I just recently bought my first N (1940 as the subject line says) and have a few questions...

1. The litte circular flange that the shifter boot seals around has been broke off partially and now is just half there. A "u" shape. I since the boot wont stay down over it now I am afraid that water will get inside the casing. Is there a fix for this? The broken half is on the R and 3rd gear side toward the driver...

2. I know nothing about how the PTO is assembled but... is there a way to convert the 9N to live PTO?

Any help greatly appreciated!! I am already hooked on the N-series and have only been an owner for a few days!!

Thanks,

Jeff

I would try repair gel (just kidding)
You might be very sucessful with cleaning it and then using a heavy gauge wire and JB weld to build it back. Once the jb dries you can file it grind it what ever just like metal. Since this is not a high stress part it most likely will work fine.
Live PTO? try a ford 4000

Jeff..... ....welcome to the wonderfull world of N's. They're not always the tool to do every job, but they sure beat doing alot of 'em by armstrong. (grin)

1) This is gonnna take some creative engineering and $$$$ if'n ya haffta hire it done. I envision a plate with a whole new tranny boot collar slipped over your shifter (probably have to cut off the current collar remains) like a big bandaid. Or maybe just somesort of full steel washer hogged out to fit ontop of the current partial collar.

OR maybe you can find a tranny top from a used parts emporium.

2) Once you understand the way the PTO is driven from the transmission and once you try to figger out how to get engine power around the tranny, you'll find out what many others have found out. If'n you just gotta have live PTO, get a different tractor that does have live PTO.

I manage without a live PTO just fine.

If'n you're planning to brushog, besure to have a a Over Running Coupler (ORC) on your PTO. $60 cheep. (almost as good as live PTO but not quite) Also recommend you get an I&T FO-4 repair manual. Readily available at sponsors of this great N-Board, many tractor parts emporium, www.n-news.com (great implement manuals archives), even Ford/New Holland fer peets stakes. $29 cheep, gettcha 1 and read it..... ...Dell

This will take a courageous fix-it mechanic such as "I". First is a used repacement cover for the transmission. Second is to remove the cover and dissasemble it. With a torch and brazzing rod it can be reconstructed and ground to near original contour only if you are as good as me. Live P.T.O.??? forget it and get another tractor. The P.T.O. one way clutch for the shaft is the answer.
