I have what I think is a 1942 2n that has been converted to 12v. The starter solenoids I've tried don't seem to be able to handle the amps during starting. they heat up, melt down and sometimes the contacts will weld themselves shut (thats pretty exciting!). I've replaced it (along with the fried batery cable) several times and have tried several different makes. any recommendations? Reckon I need to have the starter looked at?

Running a 6 volt starter motor on 12 volts exacerbates any problems with the starter motor. I would check the brushes and the commutator. Wear and shortened brushes can cause excessive resistance and consequently heat. Also ensure that the motor is not poling. Usually caused by excessively worn bushings. All starter motors are intended to be run in an intermittent mode. When running a 6 volt motor on 12 volts, the intermittent duty cycle is that much shorter.

There are lots and lots of 12 volt conversions out there. IF your engine turns over as it should IE:not binding, I would look at the starter motor.
