I never gave it much thought until the other day when there was a horror story posted here at the board dealing with insurance for farm equipment.

I checked with my auto insurance company about what is covered when I hook my trailer to my truck and haul different tractors on the trailer. Seems I have no coverage under my Auto Policy for damage to the tractor.....Only Liability Coverage that extends to the trailer...There is no property damage for the trailer either. So, I'm in the process of getting a separate policy to cover the tractor. I've been hauling tractors for several years now and never gave it much thought. Guess it's better to be safe than sorry.

I had to get a separate policy from State Farm here in VA on my trailer. It's not a ton of money, but my agent said that neither my homeowner's nor any vehicle policies would cover the trailer.

My father-in-law found that out the hard way.

He lives near Atlanta and has a Kubota that he has never been too kind to, but that is a different story.

He was using his tractor to move some soil at a friends house. When he was finished, he drove the tractor onto hs trailer which was connected to his pickup truck. Let me clarify that - his pickup truck which was parked pointing downhill.

The tractor rolled onto the back of the trailer, the front of the trailer lifted up, lifting up the rear of the pickup truck. The truck was in park, but that only stops the rear wheels, doesn't it.... and Sir Isaac Newton took over from there.

As the truck, trailer, and kubota started to gain speed in thier ill-fated downhill journey, I am sure my father-in-law applied the Kubota brakes as hard as he could, but that did no good, since the tractors wheels were already on the truck. So he jumped.

The truck, trailer, and tractor all ended up about 75 yards away in a ravine, looking much like an impressionist sculpture. The insurance paid for the truck repairs, but the tractor and trailer were his responsibility. I should be glad he is alive, but that isn't the first time his stuborn personality put him in harms way.

We all know that they arn't going to give aus a break and we don't get something for nothing.
suposidly, I am covered by my truck and trlr inshurance for anything I am hauling. I guess I better check if that does include my N and Jeeps.
