I have been working on this tractor with poor results. the fluid has never been changed, causing extreme wear and scoring on the pump and lift cylinder/piston/rings. However, before working on it, I stuck a prystick between the tractor-end of the toplink and the control spring yoke and pryed forward towards the seat[with the tractor running, PTO engaged, and raise lever up] and the 3pt raised up, slowly and laboured. Then I installed a new pump, fluid etc, and the 3pt still wouldn't work right without prying the control sprig yoke towards the seat. However, now it raised without labour. Next, I pulled the lift cover back off, and staightened the forks that work the main valve[someone had monkeyed with this in the not so distant past, and bent and twisted them somewhat]. Putting the lift cover back on, everything hooked back up and running but without the mower hooked up, the system worked right. Ten hooking the mower back up, it raised correctly until I hooked the height set chains up and lowered it back down. Then it was back to the prystick again- that worked it fine, except that it would stay up even with the lever in the down position. Then with a slight rap on the conrol spring yke at the tractor-end of the top link, it would release. Keeping this in mind, I can also pull the raise lever up, and after 5 to 10 seconds, it will raise very slowly all the way but immediatly drift back down with the lever still up. Also, I can put a bar under the mower and lift putting toplink pressure forward and it will raise. Nothing works consistantly except the prystick at the control spring yoke! I have an I&T manual, but it is not much help with my peculiar circumstances. If anyone can help me, I would be very gratefull, as I am so close to having the tractor right, but also so lost! Oh, also the control spring seems to be right . I am not familiar with this old setup, so if someone could give me a detailed description of the control spring while in operation ie: the space or slack

There should be no slack in the draft sencing spring. If there is slack you should remove the pin in the yoke and turn the yoke clockwise till the slack is removed and one more turn.
There is a spring about mid way of the forks that you describe as being bent. It may have lost it's tension and the lift will not work if this spring is not holding right. It is hooked to the front end of the ram cylinder.
The quadrant mounting bolts which there are four of located where the quadrant bolts to the side of the lift housing have elongated holes in the mounting flange.loosen the bolts and then with a hammer knock the whole mounting plate forward untill the lift begins to raise with the touch control handle set at about 2 inches from the top of the quadrant.

If you ever do get the lift to start operating as it should you might want to consider ordering one of my position control devices for the lift. It sure makes using the 9N a lot more fun. See my web site below.
