I tried to post a message a bit ago and don't know why it didn't post. Had some questions about 3 years ago and got great answers, especially from Dell.
Have a 1950 8N, converted to 12 volt system by another owner (not my choice)..loaned to a new neighbor to scrap a driveway and it kept losing power and had to be "jumped" off cause the battery seemed dead...Brand new battery! The neighbor said when he was scraping and had a load, it would sputter and die. Is the problem with the alternator??? Bad plug wires? Had just put new plugs in and this was the first time it had been run...plugs gapped correctly according to manual.
with this being a 12 volt system, I'm new to it, and am asking for anyone who can shed light on it to please do so.

Thanks

If the battery is not charging, it will run down and the engine will react as you stated. This is due to the spark getting weaker before it's last breath. Sounds like your alternator is not working. This could be due to wiring or faulty alternator. Charge your battery and see if it will run for a while.

First did it run good before the plugs? What is the ampmeter doing? If you have voltmeter - what is battery voltage running and with key off?? I don't think new plugs would cause this. Maybe you moved part of the wiring harness installing the plugs and it is getting a bad connection or shorted. Does it have a one wire alternator or a 3 wire? One wire ones take a fairly high rpm to get them to start charging after first starting the engine.

Thanks Jack...it seemed to be doing the same thing with the old plugs in. Something seems to be draining the battery..last time I used it just before changing plugs the NEW battery was dead. Put the meter on this evening and sitting there I only got about 10 volts. I'm gonna go out on a limb and wonder if I have wiring problems like you suggested...while checking today, I found what looked like a 12 ga wire spliced into a 16 ga wire then to the alternator...don't think I moved any wires as you said while changing plugs...did that once before and I hope I learned my lesson...try to be very careful. The amp meter is doing nothing...needle is not moving at all! will check the voltage off and then running as you recommend. don't know whether it's a 1 wire or 3 wire alternator...will check in the a.m. and get back to you. thanks again
