1949 8n.

I see some play in the spindle top of the left spindle as I am bushhogging. the right spindle seems fine and tight. Must be cause the Previous owner turned to the left alot ?

i also noticed when i has the front end jacked up prior...when i let the jack down there was play /slop in the spindle.

Anyhow..any advice best/quickest way to replace this bushing..perhaps on the tractor?

Should i do the bottom one too?

I hate to tear it part as i just got it all painted....

who has the best bushings? what are they made of?

as always thanks

You can't replace them on the tractor - you can't get the spindle out.

Jack the tractor up and block it under the front of the oil pan with the front axle swinging. Remove the front wheels. Undo the steering link clamp bolts and slide the links up off the tops of the spindles. Leave the drag links attached - the keys will restore the same steering geometry.

Now remove the axle extension bolts and slide the extensions out.

You can slap the old bushings inwards instead of removing them, as Zane suggests. Only problem with that is that if you get two or three sets in there, eventually you'll be blocking the grease zerk that lubes the bushings and the bottom bearing. I drive them out. There's a size of PVC plumbing pipe - don't recall which - that is the perfect diameter for reaching through and catching the inside lip of the old bushing to drive it out.

I replaced my spindles by jacking up the axle on the side where one wants to remove the spindle. All you need to do is remove the wheel, by removing the castillated nut holding the wheel bearing. I used a bushing driver to remove the bushings. This way you do not have to leave the bushings in the middle of the spindle bore. The new bushings from NH are rolled bushings and are of the correct size. If the current bushings are of the rolled type, they have a seam and if you do not have a driver, you can use a screwdriver and a hammer to get them out. Force the edge of the bushing inward by tapping the screwdriver with the hammer and then you can grab the ear with a long nose pliers.

The original replacement Ford bushings were way under sized in the ID. This was so if the bushing were battered when installing or if the spindle was worn bad you could leave in some extra stock to take up the slack.
I don't know how they are made now.

You need to order a kit and replace the bottom bushing too and also the bearing that carries the weight of the tractor which is on the bottom too.

No need to remove the old bushings, just knock them on in with the new ones and they will just lie there and cause no problems and no one will ever be the wiser. I have seen the full of old bushings.
