I decided to cut my bushog shafts to reduce the length by 3 inches.
In order to get the halfshaft off that is attached to the hog gearbox, i had to tap out the ujoint.there was no other way...

The newer X shaped ujoints are a pain.....in order to get them out you must take out the c clips at two ends....and the roller bearings are inside "caps" at each end...loose...rather than in a "race"..... ..I discovered this after the first cap popped off and the tiny roller bearings went everwhere.

Likely its easier to assemble at the factory..but a bear if you want to remove them and then use them again.

Anybody have any advice or go thru this scenario?

Any trick to holdong the rollers in place as i tap the caps back onto the ujoint ends?

thanks

I use a large "C" clamp to install . Screw the clamp down on the caps. The grease in the bearings is a good idea.

I use grease to hold the needle bearings in place while assembling.

Harder to describe than do. Insert u-joint into place on shaft without caps. Push u-joint up thru hole and install cap. Drive cap into place while holding pressure against cap with cross part. Do the same for each cap. Install in shaft first so you can hold pressure against non-movable flange.
Caps can actually be installed on shaft at same time by using a vice to squeeze caps into place while guiding cross piece.
Hope this makes sense.

thanks...I figgered that was the way to reassemble..a little grease holds the needle bearings around the perimeter.

i assume that some pressure may be neexded to squeeze the caps back on.

I was just concerned that maybe i destroyed something during dis-assembley.

I will give it a try after i cut the shafts 3" each.
