I understand it is not a good idea to run a brushhog in second gear due to the weakness of that gear in the "N" series tractors. How about in a 641 tractor? Or are the gears the same? Thanks in advance. AJ

I have a ford 860 Second gear will jump out every time I am going down a small grade. I have just got used to either putting it in third or first depending on how fast I need to get down the grade. Either is slower than second.

If your 641 has a four speed transmission it is the same second gear as the 8N. I know Dr Zane has cautioned us all about using second gear. There have been many reported second gear failures while 'hoggin here on this forum. I have replaced second gear in a friends four speed 3000. It appears to be the weakest gear in the tranny. I believe it is the thinest. I hogged for many years with a Jubilee, same transmission, without even knowing about an overrun coupler. I used second gear quite a bit but I never had any sudden stoppage. I strongly believe that the weakness with second gear shows up only when the 'hog tries to override the tractor. If the tractor and transmission suddenly stop the flywheel effect of the 'hog quickly drives the gear train forward which takes the lash out between second gear and the cluster gear and breaks the teeth on second gear and the cluster gear. Think about second gear in general. The tractor was designed to plow and second gear is a good gear to pull a plow. (some ground) Ya just don't get more pressure on a gear than plowing. Anyone ever tear up a second gear while plowing?
I will continue to use what ever gear is right for the job and use the ORC. The ORC makes it so much easier on the operator and the tractor.

Raytasch, thanks, I do use an ORC on this tractor. Secong gear just seems fine for ground speed and PTO rpm for shredding the black brush on my property. AJ

the elder ZANE warned about 2nd in the 8N, not the 9/2N

maybe ZANE can impart some wisdom in that respect
