Just Shoot Me! 9n PTO Control Lever Problem

I wanted to replace the control lever for the PTO on my 1940 9n because the cast aluminum knob was missing. I located a replacement lever w/knob at a boneyard I stumbled on to. I bought an original PTO dust cover for $15 and he gave me the lever. Anyway the lever wasn't the same as mine. Mine is riveted onto the friction disc and the other bolted on. So I thought I would remove the handle and weld on the new end. I screwed up the threads on the fitting when I removed the castle nut and the handle still wouldn't come off. So, I removed the whole control unit from the trans housing. The handle still won't come off! Then I forgot and moved the tractor with the control unit off and the lift arms came up by themselves. How does the unit come apart? I need to dismantle it to fix the damaged threads. And, how much trouble am I going to have putting the control unit back on the trans housing? This is my second tractor and I still haven't learned! So just shoot me!

I stated, in error, PTO control lever. I meant 3 point hitch control lever. Sorry.
