Made a trip to the tractor boneyard yesterday looking for a pair of fenders and came home with a 1981 Yamaha 650 Maxim motorcycle. You never know what you might find at the tractor boneyard. After a couple of hours of tinkering it's running great. Spent a couple more hours buzzing up and down the road at breakneck speeds with the old gray hair flying in the wind. Now I realize I don't even know how to check the oil in the silly thing. It doesn't seem to have a dipstick anywhere that I can see. Does anyone here know anything about Yamahas? Email me if you can help. Thanks!

Yes and no...was looking for a set for a late 601-801 and they're all rusty as heck. Finally just bought a set of the Taiwan replacements.

Gosh! I'm glad that i'm not the only old fool! My son bought a '81 Yamaha 650 special while in college and I rode it. Later, he bought a 600 Radian. Oh S___! I'm lucky to have survived that one. He has since sold both and has a TW200 in my barn (and not running) taking up space that could be filled by and N. He is also married and a daddy, no money for toys now.

Most of that older jap junk only have a oil sight glass in side of crankcase, no dipstick. Bring your flashlight.

At least some of it stays in the crankcase.

If it is anything like my '82 1100, there is a small window on the right hand side of the engine towards the bottom, kind of near the back. It is a level window and there will be marks there to show proper level. Usually you need to remove years of crud and gunk to find it.

An '82 1100 even has a sensor that reads low level and displays a warning on the dash. I often wondered why cars don't have them.
