When climbing hills or mowing heavy grass I have a rattle under the hood that sounds like valve lash. Could this be the oil take-up tube sucking air instead? I have fresh oil in the engine and it's at full. Could this just be lash and time for an adjustment? Again this only happens under load.

One way to find out if you are suffering from pre-ignition, is to use a higher octane fuel. Run out the old stuff then put in a gallon high octane.

Scott..... ..."rattleing under load" is generally not associated with oil pump pressure problems. It is generally associated with too early ignition timing problems commonly refered to as pinging, or carbonized piston heads/combustion chambers/exhaust valves. Compaired to my BMW's, I've been amaized at how seldom N-tractors need valve lash adjustment, I haven't adjusted mine in 10 yrs.

I'd suggest you check your frontmount distributor for correct timing and centrifical advance weight movement, they get worn pivot pins and springs break..... ...Dell

While pinging which I agree this sounds like can be bad, or low octane gas, or too much advance on the spark, another thing to consider is overheating. An engine that is getting really hot, too hot, but not overheated to the point where it quits, will start pinging with pre-ignition. But I too would look to timing or gas first. My $.02

Thanks for your help guys but you triggered a thought. When I bought the N years ago,the gentelman told me the governer was disconnected. I checked it out last night and everything seems in order from the outside. Could the inside be inoperable? Would this cause a timming advance or carb. problem? I rebuilt the distributor last year and the timming was to spec. The tractor pinged before and after the rebuild although it ran a heck of alot better after the rebuild. Just a side bar: The tractor came negative ground with wires going every which way. Don't know how it ran in the first place. Rewired it before I did the distributor, purrs like a kitten except under heavy load even when cold. Starts on the second rev. evertime. Even in winter. Thanks again!

Scott..... .just a thought, your "ping" could be what is commonally refered to as "rod knock". Unfortunately, the only sure way to determine, is to open 'er up and inspect with micrometer. Hows your oil pressure? ..... ...Dell

Thanks, I think I found the prob. Oil lines are sludged up and the flow is restricted. Time to clean or replace the lines. Gets kina gooped up after 61 yrs.
